Artist's Statement

Hi! - I always dreamed of starting my artist statement this way and never could, because there are rules for how an artist statement should be written, and I always struggled with them. They felt very detached from the reader. In my work I try to include my visitor/viewer/reader in the process of co-creating, and I don’t want to be detached from them in any way. I firmly believe that art should be conceptually “affordable” to everyone, and no one should feel stupid because they don’t understand all those smart words in an explication or statement. Art is an experience, and I think everybody should be able to experience it. So, screw the rules - I’m going to write this statement in the first person. Who are we kidding anyway - after all, it’s me who’s writing it!
In my installations I create spaces - whether in sculpture, installation, weaving, or embroidery form - and I invite you to be a part of them, because without you as the viewer they don’t really exist (and some of them quite literally don’t work unless someone is inside). I emphasize this by constructing spaces that are meant to be physically explored by the visitor - they should enter them, touch them, and create their own interpretation through that exploration. Interpretation is crucial here. It’s not something pre-given, something that exists before the visitor’s experience. It’s something they construct themselves; I only provide the platform for exploration. And this exploration is more sensual than intellectual. It’s about feelings, not about being “too cool for school.”
I often work with boxes. A box, for me, is something that contains mystery and at the same time something that structures the mess. My boxes float in the air, creating a cloud of sorts - a cloud of organized, mysterious chaos that invites you in to explore.
