Untitled (The Cloud) in BHSAD
I am interested in exploring installation as an art medium and focus on the relations that occur between an art-object and the viewer. The viewer’s immersion is a key element in this situation, and for me the visitor is not just a passive spectator. He/she should be engaged in the installation not just as a visitor, but as a co-author of the work. This is achieved by constructing spaces that are meant to be physically explored by the visitor – he/she should enter them, touch them and create his/her own interpretation in the process of such exploration. The sound plays a very important role in the installation. Sound should not be perceived as «the voice of the author». It rather creates a polyphonic structure which allows the experience to be non-linear. One could say that the sound creates a dialogue but the image of dialogue is still somewhat mechanical and straightforward. Perhaps it is more appropriate to say that sound here play the role of something like an interactive chorus. Even if it is dailogical, this dialogue is more comparable to those multisided dialogues which occur when jazzmen are jaming together then to those discussions which take place between members of parlaments, for example. The issue of interpretation is a crucial one, as here it is not something pre-given, something which already exists before visitor’s experience, it is rather something which should be constructed by them. Thus, installation is not a vehicle for a certain conception, but a field for exploration and interpretation. Installation is a tool that is offered to the viewer to explore the world and this exploration is sensual rather than intellectual. Today we are extremely immersed in operations of formal logic, as scientific rationality established itself as a dominant mode of thinking. I do not challenge this but propose other ways of investigation of reality which are no less important.
